If an accident occurs, Compulsory Third Party (CTP) insurance — also known as Motor Accident Injuries (MAI) insurance in some states — protects you and anyone else driving your car from being held financially liable for injury to other people. CTP insurance is mandatory across Australia, however the specific requirements for car sharing differ by state and territory.
As a host on evee, it is your responsibility to ensure your vehicle is correctly registered for car sharing. Failure to do so may affect your insurance coverage in the event of a claim. Please refer to the relevant government authority for your state below, as requirements and fees are subject to change.
Depending on where you live, you may be required to pay a higher premium as a result of changes to your CTP insurance class. In some cases, this additional cost may be tax deductible — please consult a tax professional for advice specific to your circumstances.
Australian Capital Territory
In the ACT, CTP insurance is called Motor Accident Injuries (MAI) insurance and is included in your vehicle registration. Vehicles used for car sharing are required to be registered under MAI premium class 25B — Personal Share Vehicle. To update your vehicle class, contact Access Canberra on 13 22 81 or visit an Access Canberra Service Centre.
For information on MAI insurance providers and premiums, visit the Motor Accident Injuries Commission (MAIC) website.
New South Wales
In NSW, CTP insurance (known as a Greenslip) is linked to your vehicle registration class. If your vehicle is used primarily for private purposes and car sharing is incidental, you may be able to retain your current CTP class. However, if the primary purpose of your vehicle is car sharing, you will need to change the vehicle usage to Business General (BUSG) via Service NSW. You can do this by calling Service NSW on 13 77 88 or visiting a service centre.
To compare Greenslip prices across providers, use the SIRA Greenslip price comparison tool, provided by the State Insurance Regulatory Authority (SIRA).
Northern Territory
In the Northern Territory, vehicles used for hire or rental must be registered accordingly to ensure the correct CTP insurance class applies. Driving without the appropriate class is an offence and may result in your vehicle being deemed unregistered or uninsured.
For full details on how to update your registration, visit the NT Government — Register your vehicle for hire or rental page, or contact the NT Department of Infrastructure, Planning and Logistics on 1300 654 628.
Queensland
In Queensland, vehicles used for car sharing should have their CTP class updated to Class 4 — Hire vehicles. To do this, contact your current CTP insurer to update the class, and complete a Change of Vehicle Particulars Notification (Form F3524) — updating Section A to Class 4 and the purpose of use to Booked hire rental.
To compare CTP premiums across insurers, use the MAIC CTP Premium Calculator. Current QLD CTP insurers include AAI (Suncorp) on 13 11 60, Allianz on 131 000, and QBE on 07 3859 5666.
South Australia
In South Australia, you will need to update your CTP premium class to reflect hire car use. Contact Service SA on 13 10 84 to change your class to Class 6 (metropolitan) or Class 56 (country/regional).
For information on CTP insurers in South Australia, visit the CTP Insurance Regulator — CTP Insurers page.
Tasmania
Tasmania has specific requirements for vehicles used for car sharing. Your vehicle must be registered as a Hire and Drive Vehicle — Class 8, and you must hold the appropriate accreditation to operate as a hire and drive passenger service.
For a full breakdown of the requirements, including inspection and accreditation steps, visit the Service Tasmania — Apply to register a hire and drive vehicle page. If you have questions, contact Service Tasmania on 1300 135 513.
Victoria
In Victoria, CTP insurance is administered through the Transport Accident Commission (TAC) and is included in your vehicle registration fee. If your vehicle is used primarily for private purposes and car sharing is incidental, you may be able to retain your current registration class. If car sharing is the primary purpose of your vehicle, you will need to register it under the hire category.
To update your registration, contact VicRoads on 13 11 71 or visit the VicRoads registration page for further information. For details on the TAC charge and how it is calculated, visit the Transport Accident Commission website.
Western Australia
In Western Australia, CTP insurance is called Motor Injury Insurance (MII) and is included in your vehicle registration. Vehicles used for car sharing must be registered under Class 3(g) — Hire-and-Drive-Yourself vehicle. To update your class, contact the WA Department of Transport on 13 11 56.
For full details on MII coverage and current fees, visit the WA Department of Transport — Motor Injury Insurance page.
