Please note: The information in this article is provided as general guidance only. evee recommends consulting the New Zealand Transport Agency Waka Kotahi (NZTA) and other official sources for the most current requirements applicable to your vehicle.
To comply with New Zealand rules and regulations, all evee hosts must hold a current Certificate of Fitness (CoF) to rent out an electric vehicle on the platform. A CoF is a regular inspection to ensure that your vehicle meets the required safety standards.
If your vehicle passes its CoF inspection, the inspector will apply the CoF label on the inside of your front windscreen, on the driver's side. The number on the centre of the label shows the month your certificate expires. The actual expiry date is written on the back of the label.
How to Apply
Certificates of Fitness can be issued by approved garages or testing stations. The two most common providers in New Zealand are AA and VTNZ. You can search online or use the Yellow Pages to find your nearest approved testing station.
Your CoF inspection will cover the aspects set out in the Vehicle Inspection Requirements Manual (VIRM). The following is a simple checklist of basics worth reviewing before taking your vehicle for inspection:
Lights: Check that all lights are in good working condition, including indicators, brake lights, park lights, and headlights in both dipped and high-beam modes.
Wipers: Ensure the wipers and windscreen-washing function are operational, and that the windscreen is left clean and smear-free after use.
Seatbelts: Seatbelts should be in good working condition and free from tears or damage.
Tyre pressure and tread: Check that your tyres are in a roadworthy condition and inflated to the correct pressure.
Please note: If your vehicle is required to operate under a transport service licence, you must provide your transport service licence number to the inspector before the CoF will be granted. For more information, refer to How to Apply for a Transport Service Licence.
How Much Will It Cost?
There is no standard charge for a CoF. Each testing station or garage sets its own price. We recommend contacting your preferred provider directly for a current quote.
How Often Do I Have to Renew My CoF?
New Zealand law requires rental vehicles to be inspected regularly for a Certificate of Fitness. Your CoF starts from the date your vehicle passes inspection and expires between 3 and 12 months later, depending on your vehicle type. It is your responsibility to keep your vehicle up to CoF condition at all times, even between inspections. Failure to do so may result in a fine.
